Demolition of Kennedy Space Center Old Headquarters

NASA

Coolness Factor:

Demolishing the old Headquarters Building (~440,000 SF) while keeping hazardous materials in place during demolition to save NASA millions of dollars.

Description:

This project included demolishing the old Headquarters Building, while keeping non-friable asbestos and polychlorinated biphenyls intact during demolition. The project team coordinated directly with the EPA, and had requirements in place to continuously keep the demolition debris wet, while managing the runoff to prevent any contaminants from entering surface waters. After demolition was completed, the soil was tested for asbestos, PCBs, and heavy metals, and the top 6 inches of soil was removed.
